Celebrity Silhouette - Life in Denmark

Ever wondered why the Danes are called the happiest people on Earth?

Your host will pick you up by the pier. All our hosts grew up in Fredericia and as you walk towards one of Fredericias many churches he will tell you a little bit about the city's history and how he experienced his upbringing in the area.

Traditions in relation to baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral

When you arrive at the church have a look around inside the church and outside on the graveyard. You will find very neatly arranged graves that are well cared for. Your host or one of the churches priests will tell you about our traditions. You will be surprised to learn that a teenagers confirmation is almost like a wedding in terms of budget, dress and expectations.

We are then heading for the ramparts, which is one of the best preserved in Europe. This is where the battle of Fredericia took place in 1849 and today it functions as a beautiful park with nice views of the historic city. Enjoy this pleasant stroll, while your host tells you about Fredericias past, present and future.

A meeting with the local elderly

Our next stop is at the café of one of the local activity centres for the elderly where we will enjoy a cup of coffee and some typical danish lagkage together with the elderly. Lagkage is a multilayered cake that may be filled with whipped cream and jam or fruits.

The elderly look forward to using their english skills which they have obtained in language courses which are offered by the activity center and discuss topics such as danish income tax, health insurance, the concept of hygge and life in general with you.

Your host will initiate the discussion and is also available for other topics of your interest. For example, you might want to hear about Dannebrog, the Danish flag that according to a legend fell down from the sky on June 15th 1219 and for which there are very specific rules if you want to fly the flag in your own garden.

After this 2-hour walk you should have a good impression of Danish life, learned about Danish culture and met local people.

NB: Visits to churches are subject to any church services in progress.
